The Power of the Mouth

 The Power of the Mouth

A family bible study by Keith M. Craddock

The mouth is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. With our words, we can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage, and bring life or death. In this post, we'll explore the power of the mouth and what the Bible has to say about it.

The Tongue Has the Power of Life and Death

In Proverbs 18:21, we read:
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Our words have the power to bring life or death to those around us. When we speak words of encouragement and love, we bring life to others. But when we speak words of criticism and hate, we bring death.

Speaking to Mountains

In Mark 11:23, Jesus says:
"Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them."
Jesus teaches us that our words have the power to move mountains. When we speak in faith, believing that what we say will happen, we can see miraculous things occur.

The Tongue is a Small Part of the Body, But It Boasts Great Things

In James 3:5, we read:
"Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts."
The tongue may be small, but it has the power to make great boasts. Our words can be used to build ourselves up or to tear others down.

Do Not Let Any Unwholesome Talk Come Out of Your Mouth

In Ephesians 4:29, we read:
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
As believers, we're called to use our words to build others up, not to tear them down. We should speak words that are helpful and beneficial to those around us.

If You Believe, You Will Receive Whatever You Ask for in Prayer

In Matthew 21:22, Jesus says:
"If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."
Jesus teaches us that when we pray in faith, believing that God will answer our prayers, we will receive whatever we ask for. Our words have the power to bring answers to our prayers.

Conclusion

The mouth is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. As believers, we're called to use our words to build others up, to speak words of encouragement and love, and to pray in faith. Let us be mindful of the power of our words and use them to bring life and blessing to those around us.

Reflection Questions

  • How do you use your words? Do you build others up or tear them down?
  • What are some ways you can use your words to bring life and blessing to those around you?
  • How can you pray in faith, believing that God will answer your prayers?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to use our words to bring life and blessing to those around us. May our words be helpful and beneficial to others, and may we pray in faith, believing that you will answer our prayers. In Jesus' name, Amen.
