No Fear

 No Fear

A family bible study by Keith M. Craddock

Fear is a natural human emotion that can hold us back from experiencing all that God has for us. It can creep in and whisper lies, telling us that we're not good enough, that we're not strong enough, and that we're not capable enough. But the truth is, God has not given us a spirit of fear.

A Spirit of Power, Love, and Self-Discipline

In 2 Timothy 1:7, we read:
"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
God's Spirit gives us power to overcome fear, love to cast out fear, and self-discipline to stand firm in the face of fear.

David's Courage in the Face of Fear

In 1 Samuel 17, we read the story of David and Goliath. David, a young shepherd boy, faced off against a giant warrior, Goliath. Despite the fear that could have gripped him, David stood firm, trusting in God's power and protection.

Peter's Moment of Fear

In Matthew 14:29-31, we read about Peter's moment of fear. Peter had stepped out of the boat and was walking on the water towards Jesus. But when he saw the wind and the waves, he became afraid and began to sink. Jesus reached out and caught him, saying, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

In 1 John 4:18, we read:
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
When we experience God's perfect love, it casts out fear. We no longer have to live in fear of punishment or rejection, because we know that we are loved and accepted by God.

Conclusion

Fear doesn't have to hold us back. We can live a life free from fear, trusting in God's power and love. Let us remember that God's Spirit gives us power, love, and self-discipline, and that perfect love casts out fear.

Reflection Questions

  • What fears are holding you back?
  • How can you trust in God's power and love to overcome those fears?
  • What does it mean to you to experience God's perfect love?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to live a life free from fear. May your Spirit give us power, love, and self-discipline, and may your perfect love cast out fear in our lives. In Jesus' name, Amen
